Asimov's Three Laws of Robotics

Robots

Let's face it, with the speed with which discoveries are being made and technology is proceeding, a future without these artificial beings cannot be imagined.

Artifical Intelligence, even in the present times, is taking over a lot of vital activities from controlling rockets in space science to manipulating people into ordering unnecessary things online ( been there, done that )

Without our knowledge, we are becoming more and more dependent on artifical intelligence, don't belive me, can you live your normal life after getting rid of your washing machine, fridge, television, X-box set, packaged food (Yup, Doritos) , any automated form of transportation, your laptop and phone ? Thought so.

(come on, let's be honest, neither can I 😅, where will I store my icecream!?)

-- this being only a fraction of things which uses AI --

Okay, now that we have established the importance robots and AI is playing in our lives,

We have to accept another fact - Giving the power to think to something made of a hard metal suit making it pretty hard to destroy ,something without conscience is a bad idea. Atleast if done without rules. This is where Asimov kicks in.

Asimov's Three Laws of Robotics.

First Law

1. A robot will not allow a human being to come to harm or may not injure a human being through inaction.

Second Law

2. A robot must and always will obey the orders given by humans unless the orders are in conflict with the First Law.

Third Law

3. A robot is entitled to protect its own existence unless its protection is not in conflict with the First Law and Second Law.

This guy, inspired by thermodynamics ( I mean, out of all things to be inspired by) , decided to give a zeroth law too:-

a robot will not harm humanity or through any inaction will allow humanity to come to harm’.

Pretty straightforward laws right? If you didn't catch the hint, these laws quite desperately want to ensure, robots don't take over humans

Suprisingly enough, Asimov was actually a writer. He made these laws for his sci-fi works, but due to their popularity and clear worded sentences stating - humans rule, period - these laws got assimilated into the scientific community.

Scientists started using this law to judge their AI works!

As Asimov states :-

< sadly, human beings are not always rational 😢🤐>

A meme to conclude this blog!
